The island of Upolu is the smaller of the two large islands in the Samoan archipelago and a popular tourist destination for those who want to enjoy a south pacific vacation but are not looking for the trappings of the more well known and larger Savai’i. The island is known for its beautiful beaches, incredible food culture, and genuine hospitality. It is also a popular spot for tourists due to its lower price range compared to other islands in the chain or region.
The capital of the island is Apai which is located on the north coast and is the main tourist center. The western end of the island is home to Fagali’I Airport, the main travel center on and off of Upolu. The Fagali’I airport started out as a grass landing strip operated by Polynesian Airlines in conjunction with the Samoan government but has in recent years underwent a massive redevelopment program which has enabled a new terminal to be built which accommodates jumper flights to international destination such as Pago Pago and American Samoa. The Fagali’I Airport is considered to be one of the best in the region offering facilities and features that one would normally expect to only find in larger more active airports.
